eAudiobooks and eBooks from Overdrive

Our OverDrive service provides electronic versions of print books, some downloadable for reading and others downloadable for listening. Both eAudiobooks and eBooks may be used on a variety of devices such as PC's, laptops, and supported PDA's. Nearly all of our OverDrive downloadable audiobooks are now compatible with iPod.

To access these digital books, you will need a valid library card, brief access to the Internet, and free software for the device on which you wish to use your digital book. Note: Digital Books can be enjoyed at home, at work, or when traveling, but may not be downloaded to Mission Viejo Library computers.

The following three popular reference titles (whose print versions can not be checked out of the library) can now be accessed anywhere there is an Internet connection:

Alternative Energy
This three-volume set introduces students to issues surrounding both current energy sources and alternative energy options. Alternative energy options include wind and solar energy, fuel cells, hydropower, geothermal power, and biomass energy. In addition, more theoretical sources are also explored, including cold fusion, zero point energy, and universal forces.

American Decades
Documents and analyzes periods of contemporary American social history. Each volume begins with an overview and chronology covering the entire decade. Subject chapters follow, each including an explanatory background overview; subject-specific timeline; and alphabetically arranged entries discussing the people, events and ideas important to that subject during the period. Included are biographies; explanations of concepts; terms and events; quotations; charts; sidebars covering high-interest topics; and much more.

American Eras
Focuses on a variety of aspects of American history from early civilizations to 1899 including: world events, arts, business and economy, education, fashion, government and politics, law and justice, lifestyle and social trends, media, medicine and health, religion, science and technology, and sports and recreation.

Cold War Reference Library
This reference library covers the Cold War period between the Western powers and the Communist bloc--from the end of World War II through 1989. The Almanac treats the historic causes of the tension. Includes biographies of the lives and actions of major figures such as: Harry Truman, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin.

Countries and Their Cultures
Defines and describes the nations of the world. Using a standard entry format for easy comparison, each country's shared values, behaviors and cultural variations are surveyed -- from foods and rituals to pastimes and arts. Includes more than 1,000 photographs and more than 200 maps.

Elizabethan World Reference Library
The Elizabethan World Reference Library covers the broad sweep of the culture of the times, from Elizabeth's court to rural life, and from the New World explorations to the remarkable flowering of literature and drama for which the era is renowned. Perfect for both history and literatures studies, this set includes biographies and primary sources.

Endangered Species

Grzimek’s Animal Life Encyclopedia
Serves as a major point of reference for researchers and students studying the animal kingdom. Thorough articles familiarize readers with animals found everywhere on the globe, detailing their life cycles, predators, food systems, overall ecology and much more.

Middle Ages Reference Library
The Middle Ages Reference Library explores the complex period of the Middle Ages, covering the different civilizations and peoples of Medieval times.
